Ellen Grayeditor's letter
by Ellen Gray

As usual, we had our standard editorial meeting to decide who would be the ideal candidate to write about for our February/March cover story. As usual, there were multiple people at the meeting and as many opinions. Names were being tossed around, and as usual the selection was challenging because of the large number of fascinating women living and working in our city.

But wait! In walked Kim Morrill, fresh from a previous engagement and full of her trademark enthusiasm and energy. Why not profile Susan Daggett, the newly appointed senator’s wife, she wondered. All eyes turned her way. And voila! The cover story for this issue was decided.

The thing is, choosing the stories we write about is no easy task. So much is happening in our city, and women are front and center in the whirlwind of the activity. We’re bombarded with news of bad economic times, yet we as women remain surprisingly upbeat that things are going to get better. We’re not quitters, and we’re surely not going to let anyone tell us otherwise.

Our optimism is for our children, our families and all those who come into our lives. And women such as Susan Daggett, an environmental attorney who epitomizes the woman behind the rose-colored glasses, is so characteristic of the Denver woman who refuses to take no for an answer. Her life has been dedicated to taking on the Goliaths, and she is committed to passing this legacy of caring and sharing on to her children. Now in the spotlight as the wife of a United States senator, Daggett can continue fighting the good fight, teaching her children the core values about all that is good and right about our city and our country.

Speaking of that loving feeling, don’t forget to look at our Up Front article, dedicated to the thousands of singles living in our city. Thanks to the men and women we profiled in this article, which provides a delightfully fresh perspective of the dating world. Special thanks to Bill Husted for his willingness to share his thoughts as someone who has achieved icon status among Denver’s society writers. He’s likely seen it all, yet he remains surprisingly unjaded and, like the women in the article, refreshingly candid about the merry-go-round of singledom.

This issue also takes a fun look at the fashion scene, with photographer Duke Shoman choreographing a stunning tribute to Beethoven that depicts dramatic evening fashion. On the serious side, Carol McKinley has profiled a courageous Afghan woman whose work with children injured by land mines is nothing short of heart-wrenching and inspiring.

So here’s to a bright 2009. We are excited about continuing to meet the dynamic women who make Denver a truly great city — a mile-high jewel.

Profile: (On The Cover) THE SENATOR'S WIFE - Susan Daggett, a Portrait of Determination and Strength
The first thing you notice about Susan Daggett is her mile-high smile and welcoming, girl-next-door poise. But it’s when she begins to speak that you find yourself riveted, as much by the charming Southern lilt in her voice as her innate intelligence and wit. It takes about two seconds to understand that the newly appointed senator’s wife is indeed a woman who knows what she wants … and how to get it...
